How to Recycle Pumpkins

Its Pumpkins season in UK and with Halloween approaching soon, its no wonder so many people are rushing to shops during October to get their hand on one of them in time for Halloween! 🎃 In UK there are around 10 million pumpkins grown each year, but the question is what do you do with the pumpkins you buy and what happens to them after Halloween is over?

Well it is estimated that 95% of pumpkins are to be carved into decorative lanterns (which get thrown away soon after halloween) and only 5% of them used yearly as ingredients in pies, soups or stews!! That is quite scary percentage of them thrown away, but did you know Pumpkins can be recycled? ♻️ Can Pumpkins really be Recycled?

Yes absolutely every last bit of them, even the parts you dont usally eat. This include the seeds, pulp and tough outer skin, all of which can be recycled with practically no effort!!

Can you eat the pumpkin seeds, pulp & skin? So pumpkin is actually one of my favourite part of my daily meal and I am sure there are alot of pumpkin lovers out there like me But alot of you maybe wondering can you go down zero waste route and be creative too. Well it definitely is, and lets look together at some creative ideas for go all out zero waste:

The pulp can be used to make pumpkin purée, which can be added to anything from porridge and yoghurt, to being used as a savoury dip. Pumpkin seeds are delicious when roasted, especially when they’re seasoned and put through a seed mix & If you don’t fancy eating them, your local birds and squirrels will definitely be grateful for this seasonal treat.

Even the skin can be thinly sliced and turned into crisps. Failing that, they can all be put to good use in a pot for making soup or veg stock! How about the painted pumpkins? Most of paints contain potentially harmful chemicals which makes them not suitable for eating or even recycling. But I got more creative way of having your pumpkins painted this year which is not harmful for you and the environment and make recycling them still possible! Well it require a little bit of creativity & editing knowledge and with that I am referring to Photoshop 😉🎃 And finally...?
